Tyler Parker wins Copley C. C. Club Championship!! Some called it a changing of the guard, but to me it was one solid day of golf, followed by a great day of golf, by someone younger than I have ever known to win this championship! Tyler had carded a 72 on Saturday, by way of a whole lot of pars. He was trailing by 2 strokes going into Sunday’s play. Both Jamie Barre, and Shawn Goodell were leading at 70, Tyler was tied with Tim Sargent, followed by Red Reynolds with 73. Then, on Sunday, Tyler went out and wrested control of the tournament, with an awesome front nine of 32. With six birdies on the day, his back nine of 35 for a 67 total was enough to win by 5 strokes over Tim Sargent who carded 16-4s on route to a second 72, and the runner-up position. Red Reynolds who shot an opening nine of 33 on Sunday, finished with low net in the Championship flight.

In the Ladies Division, after Day 1 there was a log jam at the top with Polly Manosh, Lynda Upton, Amanda Reilly, and Cynthia Borck, all within 4 shots of leader Sue Sykas. On Sunday (rumor has it), Cynthia went out and scored the best round of her golf career, and beat runner-up Amanda Reilly by 5 strokes. Net was won by Lynda Upton.

Mens 1st Flight was won By Tad Lamell in a playoff over Mike West. With Mike winning 1st Net, and Butch Duffy being awarded Runner-up. Men’s Second flight was won by John Sullivan, with Ray Belanger finishing runner-up and Bob Cheney as low net. And in the 3rd flight the winner was John Monette, with Gilles Lehouillier runner-up, and Marcell Putvain the net winner.

On Sunday August 5th Copley held its annual Senior Club Championship for members 55 and older. In the Womens division the winner was Polly Manosh, with Lynda Upton the runner-up and Jan Pannett finishing low net. For the Men, Red Reynolds had a great round of 71 to win over second place Eric Rich. Larry Royer finished with 1st Net.

In conclusion, it has just been a great week. I’ve heard many compliments on the expanded food, and of course the great condition of the fairways and greens to all!!

Wow!!  Somebody shut off the rain!

After drought conditions in June, July has turned into one rainstorm after another.  Friday the 13th  had 3 separate storms come through.  Men’s League was rained out on Wednesday the 11th, and people are getting a little testy.  Then when we do have a nice day, its hard to find room for everyone!!

Thank goodness we’re sitting on a gravel pit, even with all the weather, conditions at Copley C.C. are magnificent, as always, thanks to the hard work of our dedicated grounds crew, and the guidance of superintendant Ray Novakowsky.  Phil Chiaravalle brings his green thumb to bear, and the gardens in various locations around the course add lovely colors to the lush dark greens of Vermont summer.  So, Y’all come to Copley, where the food is delicious and the golfers are always slightly over par.

Golf!!  Oh yea, I’m supposed to be writing about local golf results!  Well it was pretty darn exciting for a couple of our local seniors recently.  Phil Kiely had an eagle on hole 9, Sat. July 14th, and a couple weeks earlier Ron White had an eagle 2 on hole 8. Congratulations Guys!!

Ladies League on July 5th was very exciting with several ties.  The team of Annie Miller, and Polly Manosh tied for first with Julie Bourne, Tammy Bourne, Cynthia Borck, and Abby Sherman. 1st individually was a tie between Annie Miller and Lou Pfaelzer.  Then on July 12th, the winning team was Polly Manosh, Julie Bourne, and Annie Miller, with Marsha Mongeon winning individually.

The Womens Member Guest was held on Saturday July 7th, and as always the event was a great success, and the gals all had a lively time.  The Scramble event was a tie between the teams of Sue Sykas, Sue parda, Sue Cano, Sheila Darrah, and Tammy Bourne, Deb Kirch, Abby Sherman, and Lisa Hagarty.

Hopefully, a little less rain on the fairways and greens to all!!

Wow! You just would not believe what incredible conditions Copley C.C. is in this spring! All you members need to take a minute, when you see the grounds crew out on the course, to thank Armand, Jim, Gary, Alan, and Ray for the wonderful job they are doing.

Gary and Carol are cooking up a storm in the clubhouse, and the leagues have gotten under way this last week. Of course the 1 o’clock have been playing on the weekdays right from day one, and the Sunday morning breakfast club started a couple weeks ago in the rain. The Board of Directors will be meeting on May 14th, and welcoming new board member George Allen, who is replacing Steve Lambert.

Although the leagues all started a week early this year, attendances was strong, and the weather was good enough to have made it a great success. With 60 attendees at Men’s Twilight on May 9th, the team event was won by Scott Adams, Marcell Putvain, and Don Gillen at + 11. Individually, Bob Heanue at + 6 was second to winner Ray Belanger at + 7. Ladies League on Thursday May 10th had 21 participants. The winning team was made up entirely of new members. We’re not going to mention anything about beginners luck, because obviously these gals can all play!! Nancy Guyette, Joan Lane, and Lynn Sherwin teamed up for + 5. You go girls!! Oh yea, and Nancy finished 1st individually at + 3. Forty Eight players showed up for the Captain and Crew on Friday 5/11, and this event was won by Kyle Kirch, Dave, Whitney, and Jamie and Bullit Barre. But I do think there was still a little rust out there, because the winning score seemed a little high at 30!!

Net was won by the team of Adam Carpenter, Tell Gregory, Keith Cote, and Ryan Barry.

On May 6th the Breakfast Club was won by Tyler Parker and Bill Paine with a 67!

Then on May 13th playing in a threesome, John Draper, Dana Spaulding, and Ray Novakowski won with a 68.

Sign up has started for all the Match Play events, and the Copley Memorial Tournament will be played on Sat. May 19th. Be sure to sign up for this Scramble event which will benefit the Amy Wade Trust. Just call Copley CC at 888-3013, and we will include you on a team. $25.00 for non-members, and $10. For members.

Fairways and Greens to All!!

I am sitting here in the Golf Shop, and there is frost on the roof. Alan, from the grounds crew tells me that the short grass is fine because it is so close to the heat from the ground, but that the longer grass in the roughs is pretty well frosted. O.K. so the end is in sight. But I can assure you that some of the best golf of the year is still ahead. The golf course is certainly in the best condition ever, and fall foliage is just around the corner.

Ladies League ended Sept 7th with the largest turnout of the year ( amazing what a steak and lobster feed will do to draw people). Sounds like the gals whooped it up pretty good!! Abby Sherman, Becky Doherty, and Mary and Molly Sullivan teamed up in the season ending scramble to shoot even par and best the other six teams. Carol Bradley won the overall standing for the entire year with +5 pts., Sue Sykas finished 2nd with +4.5, and Abby Sherman was third with +4. The season long Ladies Match Play also ended recently, with Cheryl Gingras the winner as a result of her victory over Becky Doherty (runner-up), 1up after 19 holes. Carol Bradley won the Consolation bracket, defeating Julie Bourne. Thanks Ladies, to all who participated, for making this event a great success.

Wenesday, Sept. 6 was a pretty sad day at Mens Twilight League. Only 1 of the 18 teams finished the night above even. I don’t think Giz, Joe, Al or George want to be bragging much about their +2, so I’ll leave their last names out of it. Same goes for Individual “honors”, way to go Frank, Al, and Eric for your +3. While the league will continue in a limited fashion, the overall results for the year ended last Wednesday. Tom Brooks was the big winner for the year, Ray Mayer was runner-up, and Jason McArthur finished third. Ask to see their trophies!!

The Part 2 of the Stowe-Copley Challenge will occur at Stowe C.C. on Sept. 30. Sign-up is at the Copley Golf Shop. There is also a sign-up for the Benefit Scotchball on Sept. 23rd (non-members may enter). The Copley C.C. Final Fling will go off this Saturday at 9:00 A.M.- all members are encouraged to sign up for golf and a great meal. Then following the meal at 4:00 P.M. the annual meeting will begin. This meeting affects all members, future club organization, and finances-y’all come!! Non-members can call 888-3013 to ask about fall specials, and the Clubhouse hours have changed slightly-just be aware. Fairways and Greens to all!!

Big Shocker folks, “Draper wins Club Championship”!! Call it consistency, call it longevity, or competetive spirit, call it whatever you want, fact is, John has won the Copley Club Championship 11 times in the last 35 years. Age doesn’t seem to be a factor. I don’t see any signs of deterioration in his game, and I suspect that more of the same can be expected until some young gun figures out how to beat him regularly, and that just hasn’t happened yet. Keep dragging your feet John!! Hats off to Kyle Kirch, and Jamie Barre who finished 2nd, and 3rd, and oh yea, and to Tad Lamell who had a great 1st round. The first flight went to a playoff, with Al Parker defeating good buddy Dana Spaulding, and the 2nd flight was won by Ray Hurlbert, with Bob Cheney finishing runner-up. In the Women’s flight Lynda Upton was the winner and Becky Doherty finished 2nd.

Earlier, in the Senior and Junior Championships, Tyler Parker carded a 74 to win the juniors handily, while Alec Stein beat Adam Audet in a 5 hole playoff to take the runner up position. The Senior Ladies was won by Polly Manosh, with Lynda Upton finishing 2nd, and the Senior Mens was won by John Draper, while Red Reynolds finished as runner-up.

Good Friends, Jason McArthur, and Mike Baker could be heading toward the finals of the annual Page Cup match play Championship. Jason got to the finals by beating Larry Royer, Shane Goodell, and George Allen. Mike has prevailed in matches over Butch Duffy, Dana Lowe, and Pete Guthmann aka Major Sandbag. The only thing standing in the way of this meeting is the semi-final match between Mike and the aforementioned club champ!!

In Twilight League play this last month, Jason McArthur, Lee West, George Twombly, Paul Cano, Derek Barrett, Randy Arnold, and Steve Sprague have had standout performances. And in Ladies League play, Abby Sherman, Tammy Bourne, Becky Doherty, and Carol Bradley have had outstanding individual efforts of late. With 3 weeks remaining in League play, the overall standings in the Mens has a 4way tie at 12 points between Roger Williams, Ray Mayer, Randy Arnold, and Joe Oakes. The Ladies are led by Low Pfaelzer with 11.5 pts and Abby Sherman with 10.

The team of Frank Lamphier and Red Reynolds, will meet the team of Nate Hayden and Pete Guthmann in the Team Match Play finals. I’m sure we’ll all find out just when that will be, as soon as Red and Nancy get back from their honeymoon. Congrats to the newlyweds.

On Friday, the Captain and Crew Scramble was won by the Father and Son duos of Dean and Cole Warner, and Dave and Kyle Kirch. They shot 26, 1 off the scramble record!! Way to go guys. Fairways and Greens to all.

Well folks, most everybody up at the club calls it the Copley Member/Guest, but

to me its Homecoming Weekend. This is like the social event of the year for

local golfers, and we just had it this past weekend. Old friends who have moved

away, come back “home”, and others who don’t play regularly, pull the clubs out

of the closet, and dust off their games.

Tom Beck, who was the last pro we had at Copley, took the weekend off from

managing Dicks Sporting Goods, and graced us all with his presence. Ron Merrow,

who is living down south, Arlington, Vt., came north. Scott Rossi, the

superintendant at Mountainview in Greensboro, dropped by, Tom Bjerke was up from

the White River Jct. Area, and Jeff Apfel, who owns and operates Pizza Putt in

Burlington came back.

Those still in the area, but not plaing regularly at Copley include: Don Gillen,

Charlie King, and Jim Glenn. For others it was a family reunion, Fathers and

Sons, Brothers and Cousins teaming up in the annual best ball: Rob and Kurt

Maher, Jim and Ken Ashe, Frank and Darrall Lamphier, Larry and Andy Hale, and

Bob Smith with Craig Bradford.

The Championship was won by Dean Parker and Tom Beck with 137, ahead of three

teams at 139. Jamie Barre and Seth Lehmus won the first flight. Brad and Tell

Gregory finished 1st in the second flight, and Paul Nesky with Phil Courcelle

won the third flight. Many thanks go to the volunteers that made the tournament

a success. They were: Frank Lamphier, Ellie Mercia, Lou Pfaelzer, Polly Manosh,

Dean Warner, Bill Schoop, Carol Parker, Sue Sykas, Cynthia Borck, Stella

Sargent, Suzanne Manosh, Alec Stein, and Connor Hunt.

Then when the tourney was over, several members went out for a quick nine in the

evening, and son of a gun, Shawn Goodell playing with Tim Longley, had a hole in

one on the second hole from the blue tees. Shawn used a 4 iron from 213 yds to

accomplish the feat.

On Wed. July 26, Mens Twilight League was won by the team of Randy Arnold, Steve

Sprague, Randy Echo, and Eric Blatt. Steve was also the individual winner, and

had one of the closest to the pins. Big night Steve! Way to go!!

Sue Cano, Abby Sherman, Suzanne Manosh, and Laurel Barbieri won the Ladies

League, Thurs. July 27, with Abby placing 1st individually.

Jay Lamell was home visiting briefly from the service, and teamed up with his

Dad, and with Giz Gillen, and John Draper to win the Captain and Crew Scramble,

Friday July 21st. Who puts these teams together anyway?? Fairways and Greens to

all!

Well folks, here I am playing golf with friends on Sunday the day after the Ladies Member Guest. Anyway, I’m out on the 8th tee, and I spot this hot pink fluffy material, just a bit of it, something very foreign to a golf course. I couldn’t get it out of my mind, and later, I started asking questions. Well it turns out, the ladies had a “theme” for their tournament, and the theme was “the roaring 20’s. Now, it turns out, Sue Cano, was wearing a hot pink Boa, and playing golf in it!! I can only guess what other costumes were on display. You Go Girls!! Lou Pfaelzer, Jo Darrow, Bonnie Knight, and Marian Moore won with a 62, while 2nd went to the team of Lisa Hunt, Kelly Hussey, Jan O’Neil, and Joan Carter with 65. Carol Parker won the putting contest in an exciting 7 woman putt-off. Congratulations to all who participated.

Tad Lamell, Cindy Bohn, John Draper, and Amanda Reilly had a great evening Friday, July 7. In the weekly scramble, they birdied all 9 holes for a sizzling 26. My informants tell me Amanda, and Tad were wielding the magic wand (putting well).

On Wednesday, July 12, Mens Twilight individual honors was a tie between Brent Paine, and Jody Mislak at +6, while Pete Shaw, Paul Clancy, Paul Cano, and Wayne Grube were the 1st place team. Then on Thursday, the weather got hot, and so did the golf in the Ladies League. Cindy Borck, Abby Sherman, Lou Pfaelzer, and Sue Sykas won with +14. Wow!! Way to go ladies. Lou led the way with +6.5 and won individually as well.

Bill Schoop and Doug Snow both have had great rounds recently in the 1 oclock league. Doug shot a 36, and Bill a 38. Both scores are less than half their age, an awesome accomplishment!

Breakfast League was won by a couple of long shots in George Cormier and Dana Lowe, while Larry Royer, and John Monette took 1st Net. Congratulations guys.

Captain and Crew saw 81 participants show up on a hot summer evening Friday, and I’m pretty sure that’s some kind of a record. Play was a little slow, but I hear everyone had a great time. Gross was won by the threesome of Dean Warner, Cole Warner, and Larry Royer, while net went to Alan and Lynn Lehoullier with Greg and Dawn Tatro.

Signup for the Men’s Member Guest will end at noon on Thursday, July 27, and play will start for the weekend with the Par 3 Tourney on Friday, July 28. Lastly, a quick plug, Summer Special: 18 holes with a cart for $30 on Sat., Sun., Mon., Tues., til Sept. Call for available tee times. Fairways and Greens to all.

Let me tell you about Jimmy Demeritt. He was a Professional golfer of the 1940’s and 50’s. He was a great player, and if memory serves me, he won the Masters a time or two. Now let me tell you about Dave Demeritt. He ran a filling station in Stowe!! It was a great place to hang out, and talk about local politics. If you were lucky, you might even hear a bit of local gossip. But if he played any golf, I didn’t know about it. Now, Dave’s no spring chicken. He’s been retired for some time, and the filling station has long since been torn down, and Dave has been playing some golf. Well, the other day, Dave comes in to the golf shop with the cards from all the 1 o’clockers ( that’s another story), and he hands me this one card in particular, and asks me to make a copy of it. Now, I’m kind of busy, but I look down as I make a copy of it and son of a gun, old Dave has shot himself even par for 9 holes!! What a game, this golf, for one day, Dave gets just a little feel of what its like to be Jimmy.

On June 21st, Twilight League was won by the team of Shawn Goodell, Dean Lockwood, and Tom Brooks. They scored a +15, paced by Shawn’s 32. The following week, June 28th was won by Red Reynolds, Al Parker, John Monette, and Dick Carpenter. John also won individually with +6.

Ladies League, June 22nd was won by the team of Val Hollis, Becky Doherty, and Julie Bourne with a combined +7. Val also took individual honors with +4.5. Then on June 29th, Lou Pfaelzer, Annie Miller, Cynthia Borck, and Abby Sherman teamed up for a win at +6.5, with Cynthia leading the way and winning individually.

Friday night June 30th, the weekly scramble was won by Cindy Bohn, Amanda Reilly, Tad Lamell, and John Draper, while the Net was won by 3 generations of the Parker family, Al, Dean, Jill Cantwell, and Sean Burke.

Well folks, the rain hasn’t stopped, but Vt. Golfers are learning to play wet!! At Copley, conditions are great, carts always go out, and the food is ready when you are. Fairways and Greens to all!!

We're back!! And we think Chris would be glad that we are still using his original title. Chris Potter wrote this column for a number of years, and it was always a hit with local golfers. So, although Chris isn't with us any more, we at Copley Country Club are hoping the article can come "back to life".

Since opening April 15th, the most popular topic at the clubhouse, and in the golf shop has been the rain. Tournaments and leagus have been affected. Umbrellas, raingear, and wet weather gloves have been the order of the day (year). Hopefully, we are starting to see a little break in the weather . Cross your fingers.

Sunday, June 11th, Breakfast League was won by Dean Parker, and George Cormier, with a gross of 68, while Butch Duffy and Joe Oakes won net at 63. There was a big tie on Wednesday, June 14th at Mens Twilight League. Paul Cano, Derek Barrett, and Steve Monette teamed up for a + 8. Women's League, June 15th saw Cubby Momsen, Joan Carter, Jo Lanpher, and Judy O'Neal as winners at +8.5, while Cubby won individually with +4. Dean Parker, Tammy Parker, Al Parker and Carol Parker were champions of the Captain and Crew scramble Friday night, and the net portion was won by Bernie Newton, Judy and Dave Demeritt, and Doug Snow.

On Sunday, June 4th we had our first Copley-Stowe challenge. Thanks goes to all who participated as the weather was less than desirable. Needless to say, all were well soaked by the end of play. Oh by the way Stowe won. Thanks goes also to Randy Arnold for organization, and to Powershift for donating the trophy.

On Saturday, and Sunday, June 17th and 18th, our annual Member/Member was great fun for all. The food was great (thanks Gary, and Carol), the weather held up, and oh well, golf was golf. Ladies flight winners were Lou Pfaeltzer, and Judy Demeritt. Mens 2nd Flight was won by Ray Belanger, and Paul Nesky. 1st Flight by Joe Oakes and Eric Rich, and the Copley 2006 Championship flight winners were Dean and Al Parker.

Thanks to all, we at Copley are looking for another great season of golf. We are so fourtunate to have a course that drains well, where carts go out no matter the weather, and thanks to Ray, Armand, and Jim, it is always in awesome condition. Gary and Carol Decoteau are again up from Florida after a 3 year hiatus to manage banquetsw and run the clubhouse. We are so-o-o-glad to have them back. Fairways and Greens to all !!
